Mom Crush Monday: Nicole Dash of Tiny Steps Mommy and Play, Work, or Dash
Our inaugural edition of Mom Crush Monday couldn’t have come at a better time. We’re featuring Nicole Dash of Tiny Steps Mommy who has recently launched a new business: Play, Work, or Dash, a professional co-working space with quality child-care whose doors officially opened today! Keeping in line with the theme of self-care, this latest venture has required this mom of 4 to step out of her comfort zone to create what I consider a game-changer for working families in the DMV area.
AT A CROSSROADS
1o years ago Nicole Dash found herself a crossroads that many moms come upon. She could choose to go back into the corporate world and continue to work or stay home with her second son. While she chose the latter, it wasn’t an option for her to completely opt out of the work force because her family needed the income. So she started her own at-home daycare. But by the time her fourth child came along, she felt confined. Uncertain of where that emotion was stemming from, she began to explore those feelings through her blog Tiny Steps Mommy where she began writing about “finding herself amidst the chaos.” She thought no one would read it, but they did, giving her the confidence to step outside of her comfort zone.
IN THE ZONE
Her latest venture, Play, Work, or Dash places Nicole in “the zone”. While this term is usually reserved for athletes to describe a state of consciousness where actual skills match the perceived performance requirements perfectly, it suites her just the same. That’s because her business is a culmination of the last 10 years of her life, including that feeling of confinement. When the mothers in her daycare began telling her how much they wished they could just drop off their kids for a few hours to work on a project, or go to a meeting, she wasn’t able to accommodate them. However, she recognized that feeling of being restricted. The more she thought about it, the more she realized how much those moms would benefit from a different option. “Traditionally you are either able to stay home or you have to pay for childcare full-time, there isn’t a flexible option for those who fall in the gray area.” Dash says. So much like she did for herself back then, she created it!
A GAME CHANGER
Everything about the design is intentional when you walk in the door at Play, Work, or Dash and you can tell that her each piece of her experience has shaped that space. There is a meeting room upstairs, a private office, a co-working area steps away from readily available coffee and tea, and childcare! “For some people daycare tips the balance on whether they can continue to work or not, now they don’t have to decide one way or the other,” she explains.
This is a game-changer for many moms like myself who are creating their own business in an economy that moving towards an online and more flex working model. I believe something magical happens when mothers have the ability to (really) create close to their children- what I consider to be my best creation – it allows their energy to foster your innovation instead of the exhaustion you would normally encounter while trying to accomplish the same thing at home.
That’s why Nicole is this week’s #QBMCM. If you want to see Play, Work, or Dash for yourself, sign-up online using the code “3hoursfree” at checkout.
5 Fast Questions for Nicole
Will you share a mom hack? I don’t really have one, but on the weekends we let go. We toss the schedule out of the window and that time period without structure definitely keeps us all sane.
How do you find balance? I don’t believe in balance, but in finding your focus. I carve out the time I need for my children and for my business. I think having a little bit of mom guilt is normal, but instead of feeling bad about it, I try to focus on the reason why I am doing it. And think about the fact that I am not just doing it for myself, but doing it for them and for their future.”

(….and what scares the hell out of you!) Nicole adds. This quote is on the wall in the private office.
